Heat Pumps in Sherbrooke: Installers and Advice

AC, Heat Pumps & Geothermal in Sherbrooke

Sherbrooke winters are hard on a heat pump. Nights at minus 25 °C are common, snow piles up quickly around homes in Fleurimont, Rock Forest or Mont-Bellevue, and many homeowners still heat with electric baseboards. The right heat pump can lower the heating bill and cool the house in summer, but the wrong model, or one placed badly, gives out when you need it most.

This guide covers what to check before having a heat pump installed in Sherbrooke, then lists the companies in the city whose listing says they do air conditioning and heat pumps.

Choose a Unit Built for the Cold

Not every heat pump heats the same way once the temperature drops. Cold climate models keep producing heat at very low temperatures, while entry-level units lose much of their efficiency below minus 15 °C. In Sherbrooke, ask the installer down to what temperature the unit keeps its full output, not just the lowest temperature at which it runs.

  • Wall-mounted (ductless) heat pump. One indoor unit per room or open area. The usual choice in a home heated with baseboards, like many of the city's bungalows and plexes.
  • Multi-zone heat pump. One outdoor unit connected to several indoor units. Handy in a multi-storey house, but costlier to repair if the outdoor unit breaks down.
  • Central heat pump. It uses the ducts of an existing furnace. Often the most discreet option when the house already has forced-air heating.

Even a good unit needs backup heat during the coldest spells. Keep your baseboards or furnace: the heat pump does most of the work, and the backup takes over a few days each winter. Our heat pump guide explains the types of units and how they work.

Hydro-Sherbrooke and Rebates

Most of Sherbrooke is served by Hydro-Sherbrooke, not Hydro-Québec. That matters when you apply for financial help: Hydro-Québec programs such as LogisVert do not always apply the same way to customers of a municipal utility. Before buying, check with Hydro-Sherbrooke and on our renovation grants page which programs you qualify for and in what order to apply. Some programs require an evaluation before the work: doing it afterward can cost you the rebate.

Place the Outdoor Unit Well

Where the outdoor unit goes makes a real difference in the Eastern Townships.

  • Above the snow. The unit should sit on a raised stand or be wall-mounted, high enough not to be buried. A unit sitting in snow defrosts poorly and heats less.
  • Away from roof runoff. Avoid the spot under an eave where snow and ice fall. A small cover above the unit can protect it.
  • Away from bedrooms and neighbours. A heat pump makes a light fan noise. The City of Sherbrooke regulates where outdoor units go and how much noise they make: check before installation, especially near a property line.
  • For defrost water. The unit sheds water when it defrosts. It must drain without freezing on a driveway or walkway.

Before You Sign

The licence. The company must hold a Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence covering air conditioning and refrigeration systems, and its technicians must be qualified to handle refrigerant. You can verify an RBQ licence in seconds with its number.

The sizing. A serious installer visits the house before suggesting a unit. They look at insulation, windows and the area to heat. An oversized unit cycles on and off constantly; an undersized one falls short in January.

The quote. It should state the exact brand and model, the capacity, the number of indoor units, the outdoor stand, the electrical connection and the warranties (parts, compressor, labour). When comparing contractor quotes, line these items up side by side: a low price often hides a model that performs worse in the cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a heat pump heat a whole house in Sherbrooke?

A cold climate heat pump can heat the house for most of the winter. During the coldest spells, backup heat is still needed, such as baseboards or a furnace. That is why the existing system is usually kept.

When is the best time to install a heat pump?

Spring and early fall are best: installers are less swamped than during a heat wave or the first cold snap. Also allow time for rebate applications, which sometimes have to start before the work.

Do Hydro-Sherbrooke customers qualify for rebates?

Some government programs are open to all homeowners, while others depend on the electricity utility. Check with Hydro-Sherbrooke and on each program's official page before buying your unit.

Does a heat pump need yearly maintenance?

Yes. Clean the indoor unit filters every month or two, and have a technician service it once a year. Also keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves.
