Frequently Asked Questions

What does a plumber cost in Quebec City?▾

Expect a service call covering travel and the first hour, then an hourly rate. Evenings, weekends and holidays are billed higher. Ask for both figures on the phone before booking.

Do I need a city permit?▾

Yes for adding a bathroom, relocating a drain, or altering a sewer or water service connection. Usually no for replacing a fixture in place. The permit is the owner's responsibility.

My pipes are galvanised. Does everything need replacing?▾

Not necessarily all at once. A plumber opens a section to see the real buildup, then recommends staged or full replacement based on condition and the renovations you have planned. Pressure that keeps dropping upstairs is the usual warning sign.

How do I keep pipes from freezing?▾

Drain and shut outdoor taps in the fall, insulate pipes along exterior walls or through crawl spaces, and let a trickle run during extreme cold if a pipe has frozen before. If the water service itself freezes, the city is who you notify.

How do I verify a plumber's licence?▾

Ask for the RBQ licence number and search the Régie du bâtiment du Québec public registry. The company must also be a CMMTQ member to perform plumbing work.

Plumber in Québec: what to know

Quebec City holds two very different realities. In Limoilou, Saint-Sauveur and Saint-Roch, early 20th century buildings still run on galvanised or cast iron pipe. In Sainte-Foy, Charlesbourg and Beauport, postwar and recent housing raises different questions: aging water heaters, foundation drains, basement bathrooms.

Galvanised supply lines

Galvanised pipe silts up from the inside over the decades. The classic symptom is water pressure that drops slowly, worst on the upper floor. A plumber can open a section to judge the real condition before recommending a partial or full replacement. Repiping a whole unit is planned work, not an emergency call.

Freezing

Winters here are harsher than in Montreal, and shallow water services in older districts still freeze some years. An outdoor tap left undrained in the fall is the single most common cause of spring damage.

Licence and permits

A plumbing contractor must hold a Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence and belong to the CMMTQ. The city requires a permit to add a bathroom, move a drain, or alter the sewer or water service connection. In the heritage sectors of Old Quebec, extra rules apply to anything visible from the street.
