Frequently Asked Questions

What does a plumber cost in Montreal?▾

Most companies charge a service call covering travel and the first hour, then an hourly rate. Rates swing widely with timing: evenings, weekends and holidays cost significantly more. Ask for both the service call amount and the hourly rate on the phone, before booking.

Do I need a permit for plumbing work in Montreal?▾

Replacing an existing fixture in the same spot usually does not require one. Adding a bathroom, relocating a drain or touching the sewer or water service connection does. The permit comes from your borough, and the owner is responsible for it.

How do I check that a plumber is licensed?▾

Ask for the RBQ licence number and search it in the Régie du bâtiment du Québec public registry. A plumbing contractor must also be a CMMTQ member. A company that will not share its number is a warning worth heeding.

Is a backwater valve mandatory?▾

Several boroughs require one in new construction and subsidise installation in existing buildings. Even where it is not required, many insurers expect one to be installed and maintained before covering a basement backup. Check with both your borough and your insurer.

My basement backed up. Where do I start?▾

Stop using water in the house, photograph everything before cleaning, and call your insurer at the same time as the plumber. The plumber looks for the cause, often roots, grease or a failed valve. A camera inspection quickly shows whether it is a one-time blockage or a pipe that needs replacing.

How long does a water heater last?▾

A residential electric water heater typically lasts 8 to 12 years. Past that, the odds of a leak climb, and a tank that fails in a finished basement costs far more than a planned replacement. Check the manufacturing date printed on the unit.

Plumber in Montréal: what to know

Montreal has the oldest housing stock in Quebec, and plumbing is where it shows. Many plexes in the Plateau, Rosemont, Verdun and Hochelaga still run on cast iron stacks and drains installed before 1960. Cast iron corrodes from the inside and eventually fails. A plumber who works on older buildings approaches the job differently than one used to new suburban homes: a camera inspection usually comes before any quote.

Sewer backups

Parts of the Montreal sewer system are combined, meaning wastewater and stormwater share the same pipe. During a heavy storm, that pipe can back up into basements. A backwater valve is the recognised protection, and several boroughs offer financial help toward installing one. Your insurer may also require it before covering basement water damage. Conditions differ from one borough to the next, so check yours before booking the work.

Licence and permits

In Quebec, a plumbing contractor must hold a Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence and belong to the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec. That is not optional. Ask for the licence number and look it up, it takes two minutes. On the municipal side, swapping a fixture in place usually needs no permit, but moving a drain, adding a bathroom or touching the sewer or water service connection does. The borough issues the permit, and the owner is the one responsible for having it.

Winter

In older plexes, pipes running along a poorly insulated exterior wall freeze every winter. Insulating the pipe costs far less than repairing the water damage that follows a burst.
