What moves the price
01
Cabinets eat the budget
This is the biggest line by a wide margin. Between stock melamine and custom cabinetmaking, the price can triple for the exact same kitchen in the exact same room.
02
Moving the sink or the stove
Leaving the plumbing and the 240 volt circuit where they are costs a lot less. Moving the sink means opening the floor, and a hood on a new wall needs a fresh duct to the outside.
03
Lead time on the cabinets
The shop measures after demolition, then builds. Those waiting weeks never show up in the price, but they decide when you get your kitchen back.
04
What hides behind the old boxes
Unfinished flooring, a cast iron drain stack, a wall that turns out to be load bearing. In a house built before the 1980s, keep a cushion for surprises.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Quebec?
It comes down to size, the finish level of the cabinets, and whether the layout changes. The calculator above gives you the range for your own choices. Refacing alone costs several times less than a brand new kitchen.
Is it worth keeping the cabinet boxes?
Yes when they are square, solid and made of plywood or good panel. New doors, counter and backsplash give you a new kitchen to the eye for a fraction of the price. If the boxes are swollen from water or crumbling, refacing is money thrown away.
Do I need a permit?
Redoing a kitchen in the same footprint usually needs no permit. As soon as a wall comes down or an opening grows, call your municipality. A load-bearing wall also needs an engineer's drawing, and no serious contractor will touch it without one.
How long will I be without a kitchen?
Count four to seven weeks for a full replacement, longer if the layout changes. Set up a fridge, a microwave and a table somewhere else in the house before demolition starts.
Quartz, granite or laminate?
Quartz is uniform, needs no sealer and dominates the Quebec market. Granite is one of a kind but wants sealing now and then. Laminate has come a long way and stays the sensible choice when the budget belongs to the cabinets.
Does the contractor need an RBQ licence?
Yes if they carry out or coordinate the work for you. If you run the site yourself and pay workers by the hour, the licence does not apply, but then the result is on you.
