Frequently Asked Questions

Are my cracks worrying?▾

Fine surface cracks are common. Those that widen season to season, or that radiate from the corners of openings, let water in and must be treated.

Why is stucco coming off in patches?▾

Usually because water got behind the coating and froze. The repair must address the source of infiltration, often a flashing or a window perimeter.

Will a local repair show?▾

Somewhat, because new stucco never matches aged stucco perfectly. On a badly damaged facade, redoing the whole surface gives a more uniform result.

What season for this work?▾

Spring through fall. Coatings need adequate temperatures to cure properly.

How do I verify a contractor is licensed?▾

Ask for the RBQ licence number and search the Régie du bâtiment du Québec public registry.

Stucco in Quebec: what to know

Stucco delivers a uniform, continuous finish, which is both its advantage and its trap: once water gets behind it, it does not easily get out, and damage progresses unseen.

Cracks

Fine cracks are common with time and building movement. The worrying ones are wide cracks, those that open from season to season, and those radiating from openings: they let water in, which freezes and lifts the coating.

Details

As with any cladding, water enters at flashings, window perimeters, transitions and the base of the wall. A coating system must let water that gets in escape and let the wall dry.

Repairs

A well-executed local repair barely shows, but the tone will never match aged stucco perfectly. On a badly damaged facade, redoing the whole surface gives a more uniform result.

Season

Spring through fall: coatings need adequate temperatures to cure properly.

Licence

The contractor must hold a Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence, liability insurance and a CNESST clearance.
