Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a boiler be serviced?▾

Once a year, before the heating season. The visit covers combustion, pressure, the safety valve, the expansion tank and bleeding the radiators. On a combustion system, it is also a safety matter.

Should I convert away from oil heating?▾

That is a calculation to run with a heating contractor: tank age, insurer requirements, fuel cost and replacement options. Contamination risk from a leak often weighs as much as the heating bill.

My radiators heat unevenly. Why?▾

Usually trapped air in the loop or an imbalance between zones. Bleeding the radiators and rebalancing solves most cases without replacing the boiler.

Do I need a carbon monoxide detector?▾

Yes, in any home heated by combustion, gas, oil or wood. It is the cheapest and most important safety device in the house.

How do I verify a heating contractor is licensed?▾

Ask for the RBQ licence number and search the Régie du bâtiment du Québec public registry. For piping work, the company must also belong to the CMMTQ.

HVAC in Montréal: what to know

Montreal stands out for the variety of its heating systems. In plexes and older homes you still find hot-water boilers with cast iron radiators, natural gas furnaces and, more rarely, oil systems still in service.

Hot-water boilers

They heat well and last a long time, but need serious annual service: combustion check, bleeding radiators, verifying the safety valve and the expansion tank. An unbalanced system heats the bottom of the building and leaves the top cold, or the reverse.

Oil

An oil tank has an age limit, and your insurer takes a close interest in it. A basement leak becomes a very expensive contamination file. If you still heat with oil, conversion deserves a serious calculation that goes beyond the price per litre.

Annual service

For any combustion system, gas or oil, annual service is not a formality: it is a safety matter, carbon monoxide first among them. A CO detector is essential in any home heated by combustion.

Licence

The contractor must hold a Régie du bâtiment du Québec licence and belong to the CMMTQ for piping-related heating work.
