Free, no strings attached.

This range is a guide, not a quote. The real price depends on the state of the walls, the age of the plumbing, what turns up behind the tile and how booked the contractors are. Only an on-site visit gives you a real number.

What moves the price

What shows up when the walls open

Rotten subfloor under the toilet, a lead pipe, a wall that is no longer plumb. This is the number one reason bathroom budgets blow up, and nobody can see it before demolition.

Moving the plumbing

Leaving the tub, toilet and sink where they are costs a lot less than rerouting the drain. Even a three-foot move means opening the floor, and sometimes touching the structure.

Tile and glass

Large-format tile, mosaic, or a custom glass door push the installation cost up as much as the material. The installer's hours matter more than the price on the box.

Ventilation and electrical

A fan that vents outside, a dedicated circuit, protected outlets. Code now requires upgrades the old bathroom never had, and they show up in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Quebec?

Mostly it comes down to room size, finish level, and whether the plumbing moves. The calculator above gives you the range for your own choices. A small powder room refresh costs several times less than a large bathroom taken back to the studs.

Can I do part of the work myself?

Demolition, painting and setting the vanity are very doable yourself. The shower membrane, the drain and the electrical circuit need a professional. A badly installed membrane ends up as water damage in the ceiling below, often months later.

Do I need a permit?

Redoing a bathroom without touching load-bearing walls usually needs no permit. As soon as a wall comes down or a drain moves, call your municipality: the rules differ from one town to the next.

Does the contractor need an RBQ licence?

Yes if they carry out or coordinate the work for you. If you run the site yourself and pay workers by the hour, the licence does not apply, but then the result is on you.

How long is the room out of service?

A full renovation ties up the bathroom for three to five weeks, and a good share of that is waiting: drying time, a counter on order, an inspection visit. Plan a backup if it is the only bathroom in the house.

Does it add value to the house?

Bathrooms and kitchens are the two rooms that weigh most at resale. One caveat: a dated bathroom drags an offer down more than a brand new one pushes it up.
