What moves the price
01
Vermiculite
It can contain asbestos. Nobody blows over it and you don't remove it yourself: a specialist takes it out first, and it is often the most expensive line of the job.
02
Air leaks
Warm air rising through wires, ducts and the hatch does more harm than missing insulation. Sealing those before blowing changes everything, ice dams included.
03
Roof ventilation
Baffles keep the insulation from blocking the soffits. Without airflow, the attic condenses, the decking rots and the shingles wear out faster.
04
Grants
Attic insulation is often eligible for assistance programs, as long as you follow their steps in order, including the assessment before the work. Current programs and conditions are on the grants page.

Frequently asked questions
How much does attic insulation cost in Quebec?
It mostly comes down to attic size, what's already there and the level you're aiming for. The calculator above gives you the range for your own choices. Vermiculite can multiply the bill, because a specialist has to remove it.
Cellulose or blown fibreglass?
Both do the job well in an attic. Cellulose is made from recycled paper and settles a little over time, mineral wool or fibreglass is lighter. The choice matters less than depth and air sealing.
How do I know if I have vermiculite?
It's a pebbly insulation, silvery grey or golden brown, that looks like light gravel. If you see it, don't touch it and have a lab test it before any work.
Are there grants?
Yes, attic insulation is often eligible for energy efficiency programs, including Rénoclimat. Amounts and conditions change: check the grants page and get the assessment done before the work.
Can I insulate my attic myself?
You can rent a blower, but air sealing, baffles and tight access take experience. And a contractor is often required to qualify for grants.
Does the contractor need an RBQ licence?
Yes if they carry out or coordinate the work for you. If you run the site yourself and pay workers by the hour, the licence does not apply, but then the result is on you.
